Scholarships for college are essentially gifts that don’t have to be paid back and that can make earning your degree more affordable. Scholarships for college students can be based on need, merit or other factors. In addition to the scholarships and grants for college students offered by DeVry and Keller, there are many other scholarships and grants that are offered by individuals, private companies, non-profit organizations, religious groups, as well as professional organizations.
Grants for college are a form of financial aid that is typically need-based and can be used to pay for expenses such as tuition, fees, housing, books and materials. Like scholarships for college, grants generally do not need to be repaid, assuming you maintain eligibility. Grants for college are often offered by the federal or state governments. At the federal level, the U.S. Department of Education offers a variety of grants to qualifying students attending four-year colleges or universities, community colleges and career schools.10 Those grants include:
When you apply for scholarships and grants, know that application dates can vary greatly and are dependent on the specific grant or scholarship being offered. The deadline to apply for scholarships can be a year or more before the program is scheduled to begin. It is wise to do your research and apply for scholarships and grants for college well in advance of when you want to begin your degree program.
How you apply for scholarships and grants for college is specific to the scholarship or grant being offered. It is important to fully research the scholarship or grant being offered and carefully review the eligibility criteria. If you qualify, fill out the application completely and ensure you submit it by the application deadline.
How you actually receive scholarships for college or grants for college is determined by the specific scholarship or grant being offered. In some instances, the funds will be distributed directly to your college or university and will be applied to tuition, fees or other expenses. In other situations, you may receive your award as a direct payment to you individually with instructions for how the money is to be used.
A college scholarship can affect the other student financial aid you are eligible to receive. This is because your total financial aid package can’t be larger than your total cost of attendance (including not just tuition, but also books, living expenses and other costs). In general, your financial aid plan is first comprised of money that doesn’t need to be repaid, such as college scholarships and grants, with remaining expenses typically covered by options such as student loans. In general, qualifying for a scholarship will reduce the amount of loans you may need to take on, thus reducing your future repayment.
It depends. Grants for college students are typically based on your individual financial need, and may come from the federal or state government, or your college.
Each grant has its own rules regarding which costs it can cover, and your total benefit will depend on the specific grants you apply and qualify for. It is important to note that grants are typically one-time awards. In some instances, you may need to renew your grant application each year throughout your college career.
As noted above, DeVry University also offers internal grants to our students, such as the Tech Essentials Grant and the Opportunity Grant.
Since grants can come from various sources, the steps to apply will be unique for each one. Some grants, such as the federal Pell Grant, will automatically be presented to those who apply and qualify when you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). Others, such as privately funded grants, will have a separate application process. To get started, begin by searching for grants with an online tool such as the U.S. Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop database.

Like grants, the steps to apply for a scholarship will vary depending on the individual scholarship itself, who it is offered by and what the criteria are. Since most college scholarships are merit-based, you will likely need to complete additional application steps. For example, you may need to submit your transcripts for a college scholarship based on academic achievement, or a portfolio for a scholarship based on your previous work. You may also need to participate in an interview. Be sure to pay close attention to all instructions and deadlines. To find scholarship opportunities that you may qualify for, try sources such as the database at Scholarships.com.
