Is a business administration degree worth it? Your goals for the future, your plans for your education and what you hope to gain from it on a personal development level will all play a role in your choice to pursue a degree in this discipline.

In this discussion, we’ll explore what you’ll learn in the Business Administration programs at DeVry, the ways a degree in this discipline can support your career aspirations as well as some things to consider when you’re deciding if pursuing this kind of degree is the best choice for you.

What Will You Learn in a Business Administration Degree Program?

When you enroll in a business administration program you can expect to be exposed to coursework that will help you gain an understanding of how businesses set goals, implement processes, track progress, manage their human capital and keep their books.

The broad base of knowledge covered in a business administration program is meant to provide students with a solid foundation of skills, knowledge and insight that they can then take with them into the workplace. The level of the business administration program you’re enrolled in will also determine the depth of the information presented, the sets of skills that are taught and any additional specificity required if the degree program includes specializations.

At DeVry, you can expect the following from our bachelor’s and master’s level programs:

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration

Coursework in our Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration program covers core concepts like accounting, marketing, analytics and decision-making skills that help businesses thrive.

In this program, you’ll develop leadership, project management and resource management skills, and practice identifying problems evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of different solutions using logic and mathematics.

Our faculty, who are professionals working in the fields they teach, will walk you through relevant case studies to help you develop your critical thinking and decision-making skills. You’ll also be able to gain insight into marketing and operations procedures through research and forecasting. Data analysis and the fundamentals of accounting are also covered, and you’ll gain practice working with many of the analytics and business management tools used in today’s thriving industries.

Master of Business Administration

Business administration degrees at this level can help you pursue career opportunities in the upper-levels of management. In some cases, employers may prefer to hire candidates for leadership positions who have earned a graduate degree like an MBA.

At our Keller Graduate School of Management, our Master of Business Administration Degree program was built to help you rise to these expectations. In our core curriculum, you’ll have the chance to develop your collaborative and interpersonal communication skills, as well as study management theories that are crucial for learning how to lead effective and productive teams.

You’ll continue your education in today’s business technology and practice utilizing it in real-world scenarios so you can feel confident as you continue to move through your career.

Increased earning potential

While earning potential is dependent on many factors, figures compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics show that higher educational attainment is associated with higher median earnings.

Data shows that in 2022, the median earnings of those who held a master’s degree or higher were 20% higher than those who only held bachelor’s degrees.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has its own data regarding the correlation between median earnings with educational attainment. According to the BLS, people who hold a bachelor’s degree typically have higher median weekly earnings than those with an associate degree or below, and those who hold a master’s degree typically have higher median weekly earnings than those who hold a bachelor’s.

While this data does not demonstrate the impact of a business administration degree specifically, it does show that higher education does have the potential to provide this benefit to degree holders.

Positive job outlook

According to the BLS, overall employment for business and financial occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations between 2022 to 2032, with about 911,400 openings on average each year during this period.1 It should be noted however, that this growth is projected on a national level and local growth will vary by location. BLS projections are not specific to DeVry University students or graduates and may include earners at all stages of their career and not just entry level.

Skill development and networking

As we’ve outlined, a business administration degree program is designed to help you develop new skills to help you meet the demands of today’s competitive, fast-paced and technology-driven business world.

Even before you graduate, you may begin to see the benefits of networking with your business classmates and may carry these relationships out into your careers. At DeVry, students not only have the chance to connect in meaningful ways with their peers but learn from experienced faculty. Their courses are centered around giving students the experience of working hands-on with the tools and technology that keep the business world moving forward and utilizing real-world scenarios to build familiarity with challenges they might face.

After graduation, students have the opportunity to keep their professional development and networks fresh by taking part in our Alumni Network and events through our Alumni Association. At DeVry, we believe that learning is a lifelong pursuit, and is an integral part of developing enriching and fulfilling personal and career experiences.
